Step into the world of game development by coding your own fully playable video game from scratch using Scratch's visual block-based programming language!
No prior knowledge required!
Block-Based Logic & Computer Science Basics: Understanding key programming fundamentals such as loops, conditional statements (if-then), variables, and event triggers using visual code blocks.
Game Mechanics & Interactive Design: Learning how user input translates into character movement, score tracking, timing mechanics, and win/loss conditions.
Testing & Debugging: Practicing problem-solving by testing game logic in real time, finding glitches, and adjusting code to ensure smooth gameplay.
Recommended Ages: Kids and young makers (Ages 9+).
Skill Level: Beginner friendly—designed specifically for young learners entering the world of coding and game creation.
Ideal Event Types: Youth STEAM programs, after-school tech series, library coding clubs, and weekend family workshops.
Max Attendance: up to 30 participants, but 10 is ideal for personalized attention.
First 15 Mins – Scratch Workspace & Game Logic Overview
An introduction to the Scratch interface, understanding how sprites and code blocks interact, and a preview of the video game project for the day.
Next 60 Mins – Hands-On Guided Game Build
Step-by-step instruction coding a fully functional video game! Attendees choose or build through target projects tailored for the session:
Tic-Tac-Toe: Coding turn-based logic, grid detection, and automatic win-condition checks.
Bop-It: Building rapid user-input detection, timing challenges, and score multipliers.
Pong: Programming paddle physics, ball bounce trajectories, wall collisions, and live scoreboards.
Final 15 Mins – Game Playtesting & Sharing
Attendees finalize their code, playtest their completed games, challenge peers, and learn how to access and play their games at home via the Scratch platform.
Hardware Needed: Venue must provide computers or laptops (Chromebooks, PCs, or Macs) with web browsers and internet access. External mice are not required.
Connectivity: A wifi connection is necessary for this workshop.
What's Provided: Complete visual software instruction, pre-loaded game asset templates, and online project access for home play.
