Dive into autonomous robotics and sensor logic by programming smart, pre-built robots equipped with infrared and ultrasonic sensors to navigate custom line tracks and avoid obstacles!
No prior knowledge required!
Infrared & Optical Line Detection: Learning how infrared (IR) sensors measure light reflectance to detect dark lines on light surfaces and keep the robot centered on course.
Ultrasonic Distance Sensing: Exploring how ultrasonic sensors emit high-frequency sound waves to measure distance, detect unexpected obstacles, and initiate automated stop or detour maneuvers.
Autonomous Decision-Making: Understanding conditional logic (if-then statements) that allows robots to react dynamically to real-time sensor feedback without manual remote control.
Recommended Ages: Kids, teens, and adults (Ages 9+).
Skill Level: Absolute beginner friendly—focuses entirely on accessible programming and logic without complex mechanical assembly.
Ideal Event Types: Youth STEAM programs, library technology workshops, summer tech camps, and community maker events.
Max Attendance: up to 30 participants, but 10 is ideal for personalized attention.
First 15 Mins – Intro to Sensors & Autonomous Logic
An introduction to how real-world autonomous vehicles work, detailing how IR sensors "see" lines and ultrasonic sensors "hear" distance to navigate safely.
Next 45 Mins – Hands-On Robot Programming
Interactive, step-by-step coding! Participants program pre-built robotic platforms to follow tape tracks, adjust motor speeds through turns, and implement ultrasonic collision avoidance.
Final 30 Mins – Track Testing & Challenge Rally
Robots hit the custom tape tracks! Attendees test their programs, fine-tune timing and sensor thresholds, and see whose code navigates the full course without going off-track or hitting obstacles.
Venue Setup: Open floor or large table space for tape tracks.
Connectivity & Hardware: Zero venue tech needed! No laptops, software installs, or venue internet required.
What's Provided: Instructor brings pre-built robotic platform with infrared/ultrasonic sensor modules, programming device, track tape, pre-loaded starter code and test course setups.
