Engineer, construct, and test your own wood-truss bridge across a 3-part competition series, applying structural mechanics and force distribution to see whose design holds the most weight.
No prior knowledge required!
Structural Engineering & Truss Design: Discovering how compression and tension forces travel through different bridge structures (such as Warren, Pratt, and Howe trusses).
Load Distribution & Failure Points: Learning how beam geometry, joint reinforcement, and material efficiency determine maximum load capacity before structural failure.
Hands-On Craftsmanship & Quality Control: Practicing precision assembly, glue application techniques, and structural symmetry to maximize strength-to-weight ratio.
Recommended Ages: Kids, teens, adults, and families (Ages 9+ or younger with adult assistance).
Skill Level: All skill levels—welcoming beginner families, aspiring young engineers, and competitive tech enthusiasts.
Ideal Event Types: Multi-session community engineering challenges, youth STEAM programs, maker space workshops, and family tournament series.
Max Attendance: up to 10 participants for personalized attention.
Session 1 – Structural Principles & Blueprining (60–90 Mins)
An introduction to bridge types, force vectors (tension vs. compression), and joint design. Attendees draw full-scale paper blueprints, select their truss geometry, and begin layout work using wax paper templates.
Session 2 (Optional) – Build Lab & Joint Reinforcement (60–90 Mins)
Dedicated hands-on assembly time! Attendees construct trusses, assemble deck members, reinforce critical load points, and complete structural gluing with live instructor guidance.
Session 3 – Load Testing & Destruction Tournament (60–90 Mins)
Bridges undergo official weight and dimensions check-in. One by one, bridges are mounted to a specialized destruction test rig where load weight is measured until failure. The tournament finishes with an awards ceremony featuring 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place trophies based on strength to weight ratio.
Venue Requirements: No laptops or computers required! All build materials—including popsicle sticks, precision templates, wax paper, specialized adhesives, testing rigs, weight measurement sensors, and trophies—are fully provided.
