Design, 3D model, and fire your own custom launch engine across a 3-part tournament series, combining CAD modeling, mechanical advantage, and trajectory physics to compete for distance and target precision.
No prior knowledge required!
3D Design & CAD Modeling: Hands-on instruction in Tinkercad, learning to construct sturdy base frames, throwing arms, tension hooks, and pivot joints ready for 3D printing.
Mechanical Advantage & Energy Storage: Understanding levers, fulcrum placement, potential-to-kinetic energy conversion, and elastic torque.
Trajectory & Ballistics Tuning: Experimenting with release angles, payload mass, and launch force to achieve repeatable distance and target accuracy.
Recommended Ages: Kids, teens, adults, and families (Ages 9+ or younger with adult assistance).
Skill Level: All skill levels—welcoming beginner families, aspiring mechanical designers, and competitive tech enthusiasts interested in physics and CAD design.
Ideal Event Types: Multi-session community tech series, youth STEAM programming, maker space events, and family competition tournaments.
Max Attendance: up to 10 participants for personalized attention.
Session 1 – Mechanical Physics & Tinkercad Design (60–90 Mins)
An introduction to simple machines, levers, pivot dynamics, and energy storage. Attendees receive step-by-step instruction in Tinkercad to start building and customizing their digital catapult frames and throwing arms.
Session 2 (Optional) – Design Lab & Open Modeling (60–90 Mins)
Dedicated hands-on design time! Attendees refine their 3D models, reinforce high-stress joint areas, and optimize bucket designs with live, one-on-one instructor guidance before models are printed.
Session 3 – Assembly, Calibration & Launch Tournament (60–90 Mins)
Attendees receive their 3D-printed catapult components, assemble pivot axles and tension bands, and conduct test fires. The workshop culminates in a multi-round competition featuring both max-distance launches and precision target practice, complete with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place trophies.
Venue Requirements: Venue must provide laptops or computers with web browsers and internet access for attendees to use Tinkercad. All software instruction, launch projectiles, targets, and trophies are provided. 3D printing of catapult parts can be provided for a fee.
