Build your own mechanical pull-copter featuring a custom 3D-printed launcher mechanism and high-flying rotor blades.
No prior knowledge required!
Aerodynamics & Lift: Discovering how rotating rotor blades push air downward to generate upward aerodynamic lift.
Rotational Kinematics & Energy Transfer: Understanding how linear motion from pulling a gear cord translates into rapid rotational speed.
Mechanical & Component Assembly: Hands-on practice assembling gears, flywheels, and interlocking structural parts for smooth mechanical operation.
Recommended Ages: Kids, teens, and adults (Ages 5+).
Skill Level: Beginner friendly—designed especially for young makers and early STEAM learners, with no prior experience needed.
Ideal Event Types: Elementary & youth STEAM programming, family library workshops, early-learning maker events, and community science days.
Max Attendance: up to 30 participants
First 30 Mins – Tech Intro & Discussion
An engaging opening lesson on the physics of flight, explaining how rotor blade angles create lift and how simple gear mechanisms convert pull force into spin velocity.
Next 15 Mins – Guided Hands-On Build
Step-by-step assembly where attendees build the launcher handle, fit internal gears and spin mechanisms, and construct their rotor blade assemblies.
Final 30 Mins – Testing, Customization & Wrap-Up
Testing flight launches, evaluating blade spin and stability, fine-tuning gear alignment, and packaging up the completed pull copter to take home.
Although not necessary, a tall ceiling room is best for this workshop to avoid disturbing others.
